The 2012 BMW 1-Series Coupe combines unique, dynamic and unmistakable design elements with a powerful and muscular body. The greenhouse with its characteristic "Hofmeister kink" is moved rearward and offers a particularly nimble look with its long hood. The short overhangs, long wheelbase and large frameless doors sit on a body with a striking shoulder line for a modern interpretation of BMW's characteristic look. On the 135i Coupe, an M Aerodynamic Kit is standard.
The 1-Series boasts aggressive rear end styling. The trunklid has an integrated spoiler chiselled into the rear end of the car to accentuate the short rear section. On the 135i, an additional lip spoiler provides greater downforce on the rear end at high speeds. The individual sections within the L-shaped rear taillights give the vehicle a lower, sportier look. Horizontal elements integrated in the rear light clusters offer a homogeneous lighting effect. When equipped with Adaptive Xenon headlights (standard on 135i), these horizontal elements are powered by light-emitting diodes (LEDs). This light design, as found on other BMW models, makes the BMW 1-Series Coupe stand out at night. Also, the Adaptive Brake Lights, which operate in two stages relative to brake application force, are yet another feature typical of BMW with the benefit of added safety.
The standard Adaptive Xenon headlights (optional on the 128i) complete with integrated Cornering Lights make driving in the dark safer than ever. The daytime running lights function in typical BMW style with two corona rings on each headlight unit enhances the perception of the car under normal and "murky" light conditions.
The new dimension in steering comfort: Active Steering offers precision, agility and comfort in every driving situation.
At the heart of the new Active Steering system is the planetary gear set integrated into the steering column. An electric motor in the joint adjusts the front wheels' steering angle in proportion to the Sedan's current speed.
When driving at lower speeds - such as in city traffic, when parking or on winding mountain roads, Active Steering increases the size of the steering angle. The front wheels respond immediately to small movements of the steering wheel, enabling the driver to manoeuvre through tight spaces without needing to make multiple turns of the steering wheel. Parking is easier and agility enhanced. At medium speeds, steering is also easier. And to ensure smoothness at higher speeds, as of around 120 to 140 km/h (depending on the model) Active Steering becomes more indirect.
Active Steering therefore reduces the amount of change in the steering angle for every movement of the steering wheel. This gives the driver the advantage of more precise steering at higher speeds, and ensures great stability and more comfort.
If the vehicle is threatened with instability, such as by oversteering or braking on a changeable surface, DSC identifies the problem and can use Active Steering to help overcome it. For example, in order to reduce unsafe yaw, Active Steering can increase the angle of steering wheels faster than even the most expert driver.
Active Steering does not interrupt the direct connection between steering wheel and front wheels, so that even in the unlikely event of a complete failure of the electronic systems, the BMW remains completely controllable at all times. This is because at the first sign of any problems, an adaptation mechanism blocks the Active Steering immediately using a pivot so that the driver is permanenty in control of the situation.
Making your driving pleasure more active: Steptronic makes shifting gears in a BMW with an automatic transmission as dynamic and sporting as it is with a manual transmission.
This flexible feature quickly transforms the six-speed automatic transmission in your BMW to a six-speed manual. When the gear selector lever is moved easily to activate Steptronic (in the BMW 7 Series Sedan with a button at the steering wheel), you can shift gears up and down as with a manual transmission.
In the BMW 7 Series Sedan, gears can be shifted with no need to use the gear selector lever at all: by pressing the keys integrated in the steering wheel. These allow you to simply switch to manual mode in Steptronic when desired - your hands stay on the wheel at all times. Two keys at the front serve to downshift, while two at the rear of the steering wheel are used to upshift. It also contributes to your driving safety: you don't need to take your eyes off the road for a moment. bmw 1 series m coupe video
